After Your General Bodywork – 60 Mins: First 48‑Hour Do's & Don'ts (massage bodywork)
By Alphássage Wellness & Fitness | September 29, 2026
Bedford-Stuyvesant (Bed-Stuy), Brooklyn, NY
The most important rule after General Bodywork – 60 Mins is simple: drink water and keep the rest of your day easy. When someone tells me they walked out feeling “lighter” after the massage and stretch, I want that feeling to last past the front door and all the way home on the subway. If you’re in Brooklyn, that usually means hydration, light movement, and no aggressive plans for your body for the next 24 to 48 hours.
Your first 24 hours: keep the release, don’t re-tighten it
General Bodywork is a maintenance session. I build it around how your body shows up that day, and I often focus on the spots that like to tighten up over time. That’s why aftercare matters. You can either support the progress we just made, or you can accidentally load your system right back up.
For the next 24 hours, I generally recommend: water, a real meal with protein, and a lower-key pace. If you’re commuting home through Bed-Stuy, keep your shoulders down, let your jaw unclench, and avoid carrying a heavy bag on one side.
Do this today
- Hydrate steadily, not all at once. A good rule is to start right after your session and keep sipping through the evening.
- Take a short walk if you can. Light movement helps your body settle into the new range we created.
- Layer up on the way home. Brooklyn temperature swings can make freshly relaxed muscles tighten fast, especially around the neck and shoulders.
Skip this today
- Heavy exercise like HIIT, max lifting, or long runs. Give your tissues time to recover from deeper pressure and stretching.
- Alcohol. It tends to dehydrate you and can make next-day soreness feel worse.
- Long hot baths or sauna if we did deeper pressure or heat work. A brief warm shower is fine.
24 to 48 hours after massage: the “gentle movement” window
This is when most people notice one of two things: they feel amazing and loose, or they feel a little tender in the areas we worked. Both can be normal. I’ve worked with people who came in wiped out and inflamed after a big race and felt close to back to themselves within a day or two, but the common thread is that they didn’t immediately punish their body with more intensity.
Bed-Stuy commuter tip: If you’re walking to the train or standing on a long subway ride, keep your weight even on both feet. When your hips hike to one side, your low back and neck usually pay for it the next morning.
If you’re sore, try this first
- Gentle stretching for 30 to 60 seconds, no bouncing. Think “easy range, ” not a workout stretch.
- Heat for tight muscles (warm shower, heating pad) and ice for a hot, irritated spot that feels inflamed. Keep it simple and short, about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Arnica or OTC pain relief if you normally tolerate it well. If you have questions, ask me first.
And yes, you can shower. I just prefer a brief warm shower instead of a long hot soak for the first 24 hours after deeper work.
The first week: keep your “kinks” from creeping back in
A 60-minute maintenance session is meant to hold your progress between visits. A lot of my regulars come in because the same familiar areas tighten over time. Neck, shoulders, hips, low back. The goal this week is to keep those areas calm while your body integrates the work.
Two habits that help most bodies
Micro-breaks if you sit for long hours. Stand up, open your chest, and roll your shoulders back slowly. One minute is enough to change the tone in your upper body.
Easy mobility for hips and ankles if you do a lot of standing commutes. Tight hips often show up as a cranky low back, even when the pain feels “higher.”
If you’re itching to train hard again, give yourself at least a day or two, then ramp back up. Heavy lifting and sports are usually best when you’re moving well and you’re not guarding the area we just calmed down.
Simple products and routines that protect your massage bodywork results
You don’t need a cabinet full of stuff. The right few basics tend to do more than any fancy routine, especially if you’re trying to keep chronic tension from rebuilding.
- A heating pad for upper back and neck tightness. Use it when you feel that “creeping up” tension after work or commuting.
- A cold pack for a small, irritated spot that feels inflamed after a hard week or training day.
- Supportive sleep setup. If your neck is your trouble spot, check that your pillow isn’t forcing your head up or dropping it down.
- A quick stretch habit you can actually stick to. I’d rather you do 2 minutes most days than 20 minutes once.
If you like add-ons, I do offer Cupping Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Hot Stone Enhancement, and Hand & Foot Reflexology. We can talk through what fits your body and your goals in your next session.
When to reach out to me in Brooklyn (and what’s normal)
It’s common to feel relaxed, a little floaty, or mildly sore in the areas we worked. A lot of people tell me they don’t even realize how bad they felt until after the session. That contrast can be real.
“I don’t even realize how bad i felt before until after our sessions.”
one of our long-time clients
Reach out to me right away if you have severe or increasing pain, new numbness or tingling, excessive swelling or bruising, fever, or dizziness/lightheadedness. If something feels off, I’d rather you check in than sit on it.
I’m based in Bed-Stuy and I work with people coming in from Bushwick, Crown Heights, Ridgewood, Prospect Lefferts Gardens, and East New York. If you found me by searching “massage near me” or “massage spa near me, ” I want you to know you can keep it simple: follow the 48-hour guidelines, then tell me what you notice. That feedback helps me keep your maintenance plan on track, especially if your goal is chronic pain relief massage over time.
